Album Review: MM9 – The Air Between (Red Recordings)

MM9

Launching themselves out of the underground and into the mainstream seems to be what MM9’s first full length studio album is all about. After two genre-blending EPs combining electro and industrial metal, MM9 decided to throw some pop into the mix with The Air Between.

Everything screams radio-friendly, sounding more like off-cuts from Good Charlotte’s Good Morning Revival record than their earlier, more industrialised offerings. Less synth, less effects, less intensity – less everything really. Even though the album was mixed by Mike Barbiero (Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Anthrax) there is hardly a dirty, industrial, hard rock note to be heard.

That said, the songs aren’t all bad. Ben Ellingworth’s creative drumming livens up the tracks while some insistent synth, albeit a bit more commercialised than previously, is easy on the ears. Presets-esque keys and some harsh guitar progressions add to the danceability of the tracks. Once you get over the Joel Madden similarities, Daniel Sutherland’s lyrics are catchy with the choruses tending to be the highpoints of most songs.

For fans of MM9’s previous work, The Air Between is a bit of a letdown but for those wanting to tentatively dip their toes into an electro-pop-rock world it’s a good place to start.

Album review: The Vasco Era – Lucille (Universal)

The Vasco Era
If you like people called Lucille or Sam, boy are you in for a treat. If not, you’d at least better learn to tolerate them. Mentioned 15 and 16 times respectively across The Vasco Era’s long-awaited second album Lucille, it seems as though these boys just can’t get enough of them.

Lucille is The Vasco Era’s attempt at stringing together a story through song. They mostly get it right, but at times it does get a little confusing. Following through the album, it seems as though singer Sid O’Neil is yearning for Lucille but then you hit track four (‘Oh Sam’) and bam! She’s never heard of again and it’s all about the mysterious Sam.

The overall sound is big but none too slick, still retaining that gritty Vasco Era feel. No song appears complete without O’Neil’s signature yelps – ‘Be There Tonight’ even starts with them. They seem to be writing to a template with a few songs indulging in intense light and shade moments, building to climactic choruses before being stripped back for each verse. ‘For No One’ and ‘Lucille’ offer that classic rock sound with piano tinklings, power chords and masterful bass thrown in for good measure. ‘Never Longed For Nothing’ slows things down a notch, but quite frankly, the vocals are a little whiny.

Lucille was a solid attempt by The Vasco Era to intensify their sound, adding more layers, instruments and techniques, but in the end it does get a little predictable.

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate.

When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vanger’s are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.
