Voxie

We are the Champions!

The team at 4ZZZ as been awarded the Excellence in Training Award at The Voxies – community broadcasting’s prestigious awards ceremony.

The winners of the Voxies were announced at the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia’s National Conference in Hobart at a glittering awards ceremony on Saturday, October 23. More than fifty stations across Australia were nominated as Voxies finalists. However, having made an outstanding contribution to broadcasting in our community, 4ZZZ’s triumph was well deserved.

4ZZZ received the Excellence in Training gong for their workshops held at the State Library of Queensland’s digital culture hub The Edge. Workshops have covered everything from podcasting to starting your own band. Our lovely training coordinator, Giordana Caputo, says this award recognizes the community broadcasting sector’s contribution to new media and digital culture in Australia.

4ZZZ was also a finalist in the Best Spoken Word or News and Current Affairs category and the Digital Media category (for Zedletter!).

Album Reviews:

El Guincho

El Guincho: Pop Negro (Young Turks / XL / Remote Control)
It is hard not to be swept up in the indie-dance euphoria of El Guincho. Pablo Diaz-Reixa brings together afro-beat and tropicalia (and Spanish language lyrics) with the sweet synths and percussive rhythms the indie kids of today are into. Apparently this album also represents his tribute to super-producers of the 80s and 90s which – I think – has something (Michael Jacksony) to do with the rather odd title for the record (in Spanish it would just mean black pop). Whatever, you could be forgiven for just putting it out of your mind and dancing!

The Bon Scotts

The Bon Scotts: Oddernity (Pop Boomerang)
The twee indie-pop of non-acca-dacca-imitating Melbournites is uplifted by smart, funny and slightly hysterical lyrics on tracks like We Like War. Not that it needed too much uplifting, this is a lovely, slightly experimental and a little bit folky slice of pop.

– 4ZZZ Music Department

4ZZZ Welcomes New Interns!
The 4ZZZ music department will be buzzing with newbies in coming weeks. Noise artist and QUT student Lewis O’Leary has taken up the challenge, along with gypsy folk musician Jade Channells and joining them is Jay Edwards, a young man who knows more about music than anyone his age ought to. Pop into the music department and say hi, and if you’re a sub band don’t forget to drop in your latest recordings! We also send a big thank you to ongoing vollies, Jessi Whitby and Liza Harvey for their contributions as interns.

4ZZZ AGM
The 4ZZZ Annual General Meeting is on next Wednesday November 3 at 6pm, Bleeding Heart Gallery 166 Ann St, the City. All subs are welcome, If you can’t make it to vote you have until this Friday to submit a proxy. A list of those nominating for the 4ZZZ board this year can be found here.
